VARIETY SMACK 012 - ON HIATUS

PREVIOUS | NEXT | FIRST

This strip was originally published on November 30, 2011

This was the point when Harold and I realized that we just couldn't keep up with a regular schedule.

See, Harold and I had kind of jumped into this web comic with both feet and without any thought to all the other projects the two of us were working on, both separately and together. And so we found ourselves with way too much food on our collective plates and no time to eat it all.

Thus the hiatus.

We would come back for one more strip before deciding to chuck it all off a cliff and start over with something a bit more thought out and planned.

VARIETY SMACK 010 - HOW MUCH!?

PREVIOUS | NEXT | FIRST

This strip was originally published on November 22, 2011

Back when this strip was posted 10 years I ago, I'd written something up about the strip that, rather than try to rewrite today, I figured I'd just repost. So here you go, my words from 10 years in the past:

Have you ever been to a convention just so that you could meet and get a picture with one of your all time favorite celebrities? Then you pay the ten to twenty bucks they charge you just to get in the door, only to find that you have to throw down another fifty to a hundred just for the honor of getting that picture and one or two words from the aformentioned celebrity?

Well, I haven't.

I don't get out much, but that's just me.

But we here at Variety Smack can relate and Harold has put together today's strip to show how you, if you are brave enough, can get get that picture without spending all that green. So give it up to the hardest working artist in the biz!

VARIETY SMACK 009 - THE BEARD OF DOOM

PREVIOUS | NEXT | FIRST

This strip was originally published on November 17, 2011

See, the way I figured it was that since Harold got to live out one of his fantasies through the comic (see the last strip), then doggone it, I was gonna too.

This is, again, another retail inspired strip. I was, as I stated before, working at a Walgreens at the time I wrote a lot of these, so my experiences there would sometimes trickle into the comic.

One thing that had always bothered me about working retail were the people that would come up to the counter and spend the entire time I'm ringing them up talking on their phone.

Well, I don't know about you, but I've always found that sort of behavior downright rude. And frankly, it tended to get me a mite angry.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fairly antisocial guy, I wasn't looking to hold meaningful conversations with these people, but my very human dignity did want a little acknowledgement that I existed, that I wasn't just a vending machine they were plunking money into.

Smart phones, social media at our fingertips, it's all slowly killing society. These innovations designed to connect people from around the world and allow us to interact socially with each other over great distances is also destroying the way we interact with each other face to face.

I don't know, maybe I'm just old and cranky.

Also, I just want to point out real quick that Harold put little Teddy Bear faces on my jammies and I love that.

VARIETY SMACK 008 - HAROLD VON DOOM

PREVIOUS | NEXT | FIRST

This strip was originally published on November 15, 2011

This strip was all Harold.

The idea was his, it was written by him, he drew it up, he produced and directed it, he did it all on this one.

And from what I know about Harold, this is an actual dream of his.

The thing is, when I look back at our time making these comics and I'm being completely honest with myself, Harold worked way harder on these strips than I did.

I mean, sure, I had to come up with ideas and script them out, but when I was really feeling productive and creative I could write up a dozen strips in a day.

Harold, on the other hand, could do a strip a day if he had no distractions and other things going on in his life. He did the pencils, the inks, the letters, and the colors.

Harold Jennett was the hardest working man on Variety Smack . . . and he DOES NOT like yogurt!

THE SATURDAY MORNING POST 003 - SILLY DAD POEMS

Ah, the weekend.

For me that means spending quality time with the family.

The thing with them, however, is that my family has told me on more than on occasion that I'm a little odd.

That's okay, they're all a bit odd as well.

One of the reasons they find me odd, and there are many, is due to the little songs I sing or the poems and/or limericks I write off the top of my head as I'm in the kitchen preparing dinner or some such.

For example, I'll hear something on the television, a word or phrase, and before you know it I'm singing a little ditty centered around that word or phrase.

In fact, I'm reminded of an evening, some time ago, when a four line poem about my daughter popped into the my head, something silly, and by the end of the night, I'd had four more of them.

I have four kids. In order of age from oldest to youngest there is my step daughter, my son, and my two girls.

One of those two girls, the one not the youngest, I have called Noodle since she was born. I don't know why, I just have.

So that night, this crept into my head:

Noodley-Doo
What's wrong with you?
Do you have the flu?
Noodley-Doo

Which then lead to the following:

Noodley-Doo
You do have the flu
I heard an "atchoo!"
Noddley-Doo

And then:

Noodley-Doo
Why are you blue?
Did you lose a shoe?
Noodley-Doo

Which led to:

Noodley-Doo
Where is your shoe?
Do you have a clue?
Noodley-Doo

And finally:

Noodley-Doo
Would you like some stew?
Don't forget to chew
Noodley-Doo

After reciting these to her one at a time, each time one would pop into my head, Noodle told me that I needed to write them down.

And so I have.

I return you back to your regularly scheduled day.

MUSIC VIDEO: SORROW BY TRINITY-X

Here we are, once again, with another video I created for another song by the band, Trinity-X, a band I was in back in the early 90's.

When making all three of the videos I've made so far, the live footage of the band that I've had to work with are from only two shows. Both are from 1993 and are from clubs that were around at the time in Kansas City: The Shadow and The Backstage.

I don't know if they are still around, but they were two places I remember enjoying.

The live footage, however, was shot on an old video camera. Well, it was new at the time. But, both were on video tape.

Derek, the bass player/singer/song writer, had converted both of those shows to digital and has them up now at the YouTube channel he has set up for his indie label: Atomic Zombie Records.

I've had to take screen recordings of various moments in both of those videos using my phone. They don't look great. So, rather then worrying about how they look, I leaned into that and added more "degradation" such as television static and what not.

I think the effect turned out well in all three videos.

The thing is, however, I'm running out of live stuff to show. Each one of those live performances are a little under an hour long, but really, they are mostly just a static shot from a camera on a tripod, there just isn't really a lot to work with.

That means that when I sit down next week to start putting together the video for the last song on the Bootleg Starter Kit, Flatline, I'm going to have to challenge myself even further.

I'm rather looking forward to it.

If you like the song, you can download it, and the entire Bootleg Starter Kit, for free at:

NORMAN OKLAHOMA - FAIRY TALE: PART SIX

I'm not one to use chemicals or alcohol to alter my state of mind. But then, because of my rapid healing, there ain’t much that can alter my state of mind. Not unless I imbibe more than what your average bowling team can handle. And frankly, that can get expensive.

But that doesn’t mean I ain’t susceptible to magic.

Fairy magic ain’t all that strong. By that I mean that they can’t do a whole lot with it. Not like a wizard.

They can make themselves invisible, though they don’t seem to like to. They can use their magic to lift objects that someone their size would never be able to lift, though they are mighty strong. But the most popular weapon in their magical arsenal is the ability to mesmerize. In other words, they cloud your brain and, in essence, put you at their command.

There are limits, of course, and one alone isn’t enough to put a spell on someone.

No, it usually takes a swarm.

As I watched the lights spin and dance, everything suddenly made sense to me. All the things in the my life that I’d been fretting over were washed away and I finally felt something I’d never felt before.

A sense of belonging, of being part of something bigger than myself, of being part of a family.

I’ve never had a family, not that I can remember. And yet, here it was, right in front of me the entire time.

Nona and her clan.

Family.

Jake would be like the little brother I never had. And the others? Well, like I said, I ain’t never had a family before.

“Is this where we’ll live?” I asked Nona.

“The tree,” she said. “The tree is now your home.”

“It’s a bit small,” I said, frowning.

Nona glared at me and I felt a deep shame course through me.

“Sorry,” I said. “It’s beautiful.”

Nona’s frown quickly turned upside down and I found my heart filled to the brim with joy.

To be continued ...

VARIETY SMACK 007 - THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR

PREVIOUS | NEXT | FIRST

This strip was originally published on November 11, 2011

Yes, it's another retail inspired strip.

I love this time of year. I love the fall, and I love the holiday season. This time of year really helps, for me, to cement the importance of family, and that's why, for me, it is the most wonderful time of the year.

However, this strip was written during my third holiday season working in retail, an institution that gives this time a year a whole new meaning.

That was a decade ago, but the experiences there, during that time, during the holiday season, have forever stained my soul.

Because working in retain as the holiday season dawns means dealing with customers while making sure the promo aisle is stocked and looks nice, even after hundreds of people rifle through the products, people who never put stuff back where it goes (seriously, how hard is that . . . ok, I'm guilty of it too, but still!), people who stampede through each and every day like a herd of wildebeest and never once, not once, say 'thank you' or 'excuse me' or 'nice shirt', yet always have a boatload of negative things to say like 'this is too expensive' or 'you never have what I want' or 'your shirt is ugly'!

And what's up with that!? I like my shirt! My wife bought me this shirt, and frankly I don't give much of a rat's furry behind what you think about my shirt!

I'm sorry, I seem to have gotten away from my original train of thought. Where was I?

Oh yeah:

I love this time of year, even though the retail industry, as a collective, does its best to try and dampen my spirits.

Remember, if you want Harold and I to get the band back together and create more comic strip fun, please say so by leaving a comment below.

Happy Veterans Day!

VARIETY SMACK 006 - WORKING FOR A LIVING

PREVIOUS | NEXT | FIRST

This strip was originally published on November 8, 2011

This is another strip that I based on an actual experience of mine.

At the time Harold and I were doing Variety Smack, I was working at a Walgreens as a second job, and I'd be there, in my Walgreens shirt and nametag, stocking shelves, and most nights someone would come up to me and ask if I worked there.

I can admit that I never responded the way our man above did, but I always wanted to. I just never did, because frankly, I'm a bit of a coward.

Remember, if you want Harold and I to get the band back together and create more comic strip fun, please say so by leaving a comment below.

Thanks!

MUSIC VIDEO: DENIAL BY TRINITY-X

Okay, so, I'd planned on waiting a full week, but I couldn't help myself... I made another video.

This is for the Trinity-X song, Denial, and like the other video I made (you can find that here), this song comes off the same demo, The Bootleg Starter Kit from 1992.

I wasn't yet 20 years old when we recorded this demo.

In fact, I wasn't old enough to be in most of the clubs we played back then because they served alcohol.

What that meant was that for some places I had to wait outside before we went on, then I'd be allowed to come into the club so that we could play our set, then we'd tear down all the equipment and pack it away in my mini van, then we'd have to leave without watching any of the other bands.

There was one club, however, I don't recall the same of it (maybe if Derek and Paul are reading this they can remind me), but their sound booth was a completely separate room. It was on the second floor and it looked out over the stage like a balcony. In that club I was allowed to hang out in that room before and after our set so I could (and by proxy, Derek and Paul could) watch the other band or bands.

Of course, now that I think about it, Paul was only a couple of months older than me, so he had the same restrictions.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the video, I think I improved a bit this second time around.

There are two more songs on the Bootleg Starter Kit and I think I'm going to go ahead and do videos for those two songs as well.

If you like the song, you can download it, and the entire Bootleg Starter Kit, for free at:

THE SATURDAY MORNING POST 002 - TWEETING FOR SOUP

Just recently I ran across a series of four photos I took back in 2017. At the time I'd just gotten my first smart phone and had begun taking pictures of stuff and putting them up on Twitter and all that.

With the first one, I posted about eating soup from my coffee mug, and then the joke just escalated from there. These were all taken throughout the course of one week in 2017, from my desk at work.

And so, I present to you, the photos, along with the text from each of the four tweets:

MONDAY:

What's wrong with my coffee!?

Oh wait. It's soup.

WEDNESDAY:

HOLY CRAP! WHAT'S WRONG WITH MY COFFEE!!!!!!

Oh, wait. It's soup again.

Sorry, everyone. Sorry.

THURSDAY:

GREAT CESAR'S GHOST! WHAT IN THE NINE REALMS IS UP WITH MY COFFEE!!!!!!!

Oh, wait. It's just a sausage biscuit. Sorry, everyone!

FRIDAY:

BY THE TWIN SUNS OF TATOOINE, WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY COFFEE!!??!!??!!??!!??!!

Oh, wait. That's just Admiral Akbar.

Sorry, everyone. Sorry!

I don't do silly stuff like that on Twitter anymore. Not sure why . . . I should get back to it.

Anyway, if you're interested, you can find me on Twitter under the handle @SteevenOrrElse.

Maybe I'll start being silly again.

NORMAN OKLAHOMA - FAIRY TALE: PART FIVE

I know very little about fairies, and what I do know doesn’t make a lot of sense.

For example, I know that they like trees. But not just any tree. It has to be old. I get that, I suppose. The older the tree the longer it’s been connected to the pulse of the earth or some such. But as much as they like old trees, they prefer those that stand alone. That’s what I don’t get. Like I said, I’ve asked, and if you’ve ever tried to ask a fairy anything then you’re intimately familiar with the meaning of the word ‘futile’.

Fairies dislike questions. They ain’t secretive or nothing, they just find them annoying. Like they ain’t got time to be messing with such nonsense. Most fairies ain’t willing to explain much of anything and just asking them a question tends to put them off. But the one time I finally got an answer, it went right over my head.

“A forest is too noisy,” I was told. “One tree is nice and quiet. Means we don’t have to do what they tell us.”

See what I mean.

But then, that’s fairies. If it weren’t for the wings, the height, and the magic, I’d think they were nothing more than bored teenagers in a small town with nothing to do but make a nuisance of themselves.

“You ain’t excited to see me, Nona?” I said, keeping the barrel of the gun trained on the fairy.

Nona and I had met before. In fact, we’d had our fair share of run-ins over the years, but I’d never known her to do something like this, kidnapping a child.

“Should I be?” said the fairy. “You’ve only come to ruin our fun. Again.”

“Come on, Nona,” I said. “You know better than that. You kidnapped a child.”

“So?” she said, crossing her arms in front of her chest.

“Well, you should know that that’s something I’m gonna have issue with. Playing pranks is one thing. You want to drop water balloons on people or toilet paper a house, I’m likely to look the other way cuz no one’s getting hurt. But you have to have known that I’d draw the line at this.”

“Maybe I did,” she said. “So what. We’re just having fun.”

“The boy’s family is worried, Nona.”

“Family.” She said the word with such scorn that I wouldn’t have been surprised if fire had shot from her eyes. “He doesn’t like his family. They’re mean to him.”

“Oh?” I said. “And how’s that? How are they mean to him?”

“They wouldn’t let me go to the movies last night,” Jake said. “I wanted to see the new Walter movie and they said I was too young.”

“Walter?” I said. “You mean them Walter Dark movies?”

“Yeah,” Jake said. “All my friends have seen it.”

“Well dang, Jake, that’s one of them slasher movies. You are too young for such a film. They’re more than graphic.”

“I can handle it,” Jake said. “I’m the only one in school who hasn’t seen it.”

“I highly doubt that,” I said.

Jake didn’t respond.

“So, is that it?” I continued. “Is that how they’re mean to you? By not letting you see the kind of movie that’s bound to give you nightmares for weeks?”

“You don’t understand,” Jake said.

“Yeah,” Nona said. “You don’t understand. Jake wants to live with us now.”

“Does he?” I said. “Is that why you have him tied up?”

“We were just coming to let him lose,” she said, glaring down her nose at me. “But then you showed up.”

She buzzed off a little to the left. I kept the gun trained on her.

“Stop pointing your stupid gun at me,” she said. “You’re so dumb. You and your stupid guns. Guns can’t hurt fairies. We’re invincible.”

“Now that ain’t necessarily true,” I said.

“Yes it is!”

“Sure, this gun here won’t kill you. I know that and you know that. But you also know that if I were to fire this here gun, I’d hit you. And while it might not kill you, it’s sure gonna hurt like the dickens.”

“So?” she said. “You don’t scare us. You’re just big and stupid like all the other humans. Leave us alone!”

“Why don’t you go ahead and untie young Jake there,” I said. “You say he wants to stay. Prove it. Let him go.”

Nona rolled her eyes again. But then she turned to the others who were still buzzing here and there so fast that they were just lights streaking by. She shouted out in the fairy language and two of the lights broke off from the group and zipped over to Jake. A few seconds later the rope that bound him to the tree fell away.

Jake took a few steps back, massaging his wrists. They had been bleeding from where the rope had dug into his skin. I don’t think he was even aware of it. He was smiling, and he moved like a drunk.

“Jake,” I said “Let me take you home. Your parents are worried sick.”

“No,” he said. “I am home.”

“You got a spell on him,” I said to Nona.

To prove my point Jake walked into the the center of the circling lights, laughing.

“Go away, stupid giant,” Nona said.

“Yeah,” Jake called out. “Take off, dude.”

“You know I can’t do that,” I said, watching the lights as they circled the boy. They moved so fast that they were all just one solid line now, as if Jake stood in the center of a multicolored neon ring.

“Maybe you want to stay too?” Nona said.

That sounded like the best idea I’d heard all day. Heck, all week.

“Maybe I do want to stay,” I said.

“Maybe you want to be a part of the family?”

“Family,” I said, holstering my pistols. “Ain’t never had family before.”

“We’ll be your family, Norman Oklahoma,” Nona said.

Like I said, I don’t know much about fairies. What I do know, however was that had I been in my right mind at that moment, I would have opened fire.

To be continued ...
